ストックホルムを後した私たちは、バルト海に浮かぶ島、ゴットランドへ。
After we left Stockholm, we moved to Gotland Island in the Baltic Sea.
ラッキーなことに、私たちが訪れた４日間は、ゴットランドの旧市街ヴィスビーの中世の祭り週間の真っ最中。
Luckily, the four days we visited were in the middle of Medieval Week in the old town of Visby.
宿泊先のホテルの裏庭が、祭りの露店が並ぶ広場に続いていました。
Our hotel's backyard connected to a park full of festival stands.
辺りには中世の衣装に身を包んだ老若男女が…
There were so many people of all ages wearing medieval costumes there.
日本のハロウィンでよく見られる、市販のチープなコスチュームではなく、足先から頭のてっぺんまで抜かりなく完璧なドレスアップぶりです。
And these were not like the cheap Halloween costumes we sometimes see in Japan, they were perfectly dressed from top to bottom.
ヴィスビーの旧市街は、13世紀に建てられた塀に囲まれており、多くの教会などは廃墟と化しているものの、大半の建物は中世の面影を残しています。
The old town of Visby is surrounded by a 13th century wall and with many church ruins and most buildings have some trace of the medieval era.
競技場では、中世風乗馬や弓の腕を競い合う大会が催され、私たちもチケットを入手して観戦。
At the local stadium, we got tickets to watch a medival-style mounted archery competition.
さて、祭りの楽しさもさることながら、非常に印象的で忘れられない風景は、実はヴィスビーを離れてから、ゴットランドの北の小さな島、フォーレ島で見ることになりました。
We had great fun at the festival, but the most unforgettable, impressive scenery was in the north island area called Faro, when we later left Visby.
この小旅行、ヴィスビー在住の私の40年来の友達、アヤが車で案内してくれました。
This part of our trip was planned by my 40 plus year friend Aya, and she drove us there.
フェリーに乗り、ひたすらのどかな風景の中を車は走り続け、奇妙な形の岩が立ち並ぶ海岸にたどり着きました。
We took a ferry and then had a lengthy drive through calming, peaceful rural scenery before arriving at a beach full of unusually shaped rocks.
最高の晴天、見渡す限りの海、奇岩のてっぺんに立って、深呼吸…
In the beautiful weather, the sea stretched as far as we could see, and I breathed deeply standing on the top of the rocks.
この島では特に、スウェーデンらしい石灰岩の建物が見られました。
There were some typical Swedish limestone houses especially on this island.
石灰岩の廃墟を利用した地元のカフェに立ち寄ると、時間も場所も忘れるような不思議な感覚を覚えました。
I felt some strange feeling forgetting time and place when we stopped at the local cafe made using the ruined limestone building.
