先週末、箱根に昨年10月にオープンしたばかりの岡田美術館に行ってきました。
Last weekend, I visited the Okada Museum of Art which opened last October in Hakone.
今、喜多川歌麿の傑作「深川の雪」が特別公開されているんです。
'Fukagawa in the Snow', one of Kitagawa Utsmaro's masterpieces, is on exhibition now.
この作品は三部作の一つで、あとの二つの作品、「品川の月」と」「吉原の花」は、アメリカの美術館に所蔵されているんです。
The work is one of a triptych with the other two, 'Moon at Shinagawa' and 'Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara' both in American museums.
ヨーロッパでジャポニズムがもてはやされていた時代に、これら三部作は揃ってパリに渡り、その後バラバラになっていたんだとか。
These three paintings were once brought to Paris during the Japonisme boom era but were separated thereafter.
この「雪」だけが66年もの間行方不明になり、幸いにもそれが二年前に日本国内で発見されたというわけです。
This 'Snow' work disappeared more than 66 years ago but, luckily, it was found in Japan two years ago.
修復に半年以上かけて、今回発表に至っということで、そんなストーリーを聞いてしまうと観てみたくなるものです。
The painting required more than 6 months of restoration time and the whole story made me excited to see it.
縦2m, 横3.4mの大作は、さすがに見応えがあります。
This massive work is 2m tall by 3.4m wide and is well worth seeing.

There are 5 floors in this huge museum building and most of the items are Japanese, Korean, and Chinese paintings, with ancient pottery and other religious artifacts.
入口は国際空港並みのセキュリティチェックがあるのも納得かな。
Understandably, there was a tight security check at the entrance that was similar to an international airport.
建物裏手には、散策コースを含む自然を生かした庭園もあって、とにかく広い広い。
Behind the building, there is a long walking path within a spacious natural garden.
温泉地として観光客を集める箱根だけに、かけ流しの足湯を楽しめるコーナーが入口前にあるのも、ユニークなアイデア。
Uniquely, visitors can enjoy a foot bath with hot spring water outside the entrance as you're in the popular Hakone spa area.
「足湯つき美術館」、時間をとって、ゆっくり訪れてみてください。
