私が9〜10歳のころ、図書館で初めて「いやいやえん」と出会いました。
When I was 9 or 10 years old, I read 'Iyaiyaen' at a library for the first time.
なぜあんなに惹きつけられたのでしょう。
Why was I so interested in this book?
子供の私にとって、半分空想の、あり得ない、でももしかして、あるのかもしれない、不思議なストーリー。
The story was strange, a half impossible fantasy ... but as a child it felt real to me.
カラフルでもない線描きの、でも、たならなく可愛い主人公しげると登場人物たち。
The characters in the story (including Shigeru) are simply drawn, without colour, but are still very lovely.
大人になった今思うに、他の児童絵本にあるような「教訓」がない自由なストーリー、そこにどんどん引き込まれたのだと思います。
Now that I've grown up, I think that I was attracted to the story because it's free from the moral teachings normally found in children's books.
その頃からずっと私は、絵本作家中川李枝子さんと、挿絵担当の山脇百合子さんのファン。
Since then, I've been an devotee of writer Rieko Nakagawa and illustrator Yuriko Yamawaki.
2/27から開催されている「誕生50周年記念 ぐりとぐら展」に行ってきました。
I went to the exhibition, 'The 50th Anniversary of Guri & Gura' that started on February 27th.
会場は、原作者お二人のデビュー作「いやいやえん」から「ぐりとぐら」全７作品までの原画や、絵本のストーリーをそのまま再現したミニテーマパークのような作りになっています。
The exhibition hall is designed as a small theme park in the style of the picture book world with original drawings from 'Iyaiyaen' and the 'Guri and Gura' seven book series.
私は土曜日の朝、開場前に着きましたが、親子連れで大変賑わっていました。
I arrived early Saturday morning ... it was crowded with many families.
この展覧会で興味深いことを知りました。
I learned some interesting things in the exhibition.
宮崎駿監督が「ぐりとぐら」をアニメーション化する構想もあったようです。
Hayao Miyazaki had a plan to make an animated version of Guri and Gura.
しかし、幻に終わりましたが。
However, the plan fell through.
その辺のエピソードは会場で、お二人の対談映像の中で見られます。
At the exhibition, you can watch a video of these two talking shop about the movie idea.
映画「となりのトトロ」のテーマソング「さんぽ」は、中川李枝子さんの作詞だったんですね。
Interestingly, the 'Sampo' theme song from 'My Neighbor Totoro' was written by Rieko Nakagawa.
今や世界11カ国語に翻訳もされ、親しまれている「ぐりとぐら」。
Guri and Gura books have been translated into 11 languages and are popular throughout the world.
私も英語バージョンをキッズクラスの中で使っています。
I use the English version in my kids classes.
このイベント、3/10(月)まで松屋銀座で開催中。
This event is being held until March 10th at Matsuya Ginza, Tokyo.
