11/20、奈良県吉野町の櫻本坊へ、天武天皇御神像献茶式・お茶会に行ってまいりました。On November 20th, I attended a tea-offering ceremony for Emperor Tenmu’s statue and a tea gathering at Sakuramotobo in Yoshino, Nara prefecture.
櫻本坊は、約1300年前に天武天皇により創設された、神仏習合の修行道場です。Sakuramoto-bo is a Shinto-Buddhist training school founded 1,300 years ago by Emperor Tenmu.
敷地内には、天武天皇の夢に現れたという、シンボルの見事なしだれ桜があります。On the premises, there is a beautiful symbolic weeping cherry tree which is said to have appeared in Emperor Tenmu's dream.
本堂とその脇の建物には、重要文化財を含む様々な寺宝が祀られていました。Various temple treasures including some important cultural properties are enshrined in the main hall and an adjacent building.
本堂で、天武天皇御神像を拝み(通常非公開、この時期のみご開扉)、献茶式に参列した後、お茶会を催されるお部屋へと案内されました。In the main hall I attended the tea-offering ceremony for the statue of Emperor Tenmu (it's usually closed, but open only this time of year) and was later guided to another room.
全開にした窓からは11月とは思えない陽射しが降り注ぎ、所々紅葉した辺りの山の木々が見下ろせました。Through the open window sunlight poured in, which made it seem unlike November, and we could see trees on the nearby mountains some of which had turned red.
本席の主菓子は「峰紅葉」、お抹茶は自然農園製、苦味の効いたパワフルな味わいでした。The main confectionery in the first room was called, 'Colored Mountaintop' and the matcha was from an organic farm and tasted bitter and powerful.
昼食は「やまと薬膳御弁当」、目にも美しく、オーガニック野菜の旨味が凝縮されていて、体が浄化されるようでした。For lunch, we had Yamato Yakusen Obento which was beautiful to the eyes and full of delicious organic vegetables ... it seemed to purify the body.
さて、二席目の100畳の広間は、ぐるりとガラスの窓に囲まれていて、まるで森林の中に浮いているような清々しい空間でした。The second tea gathering was held in 100 tatami room surrounded in glass windows and was a refreshing space, almost like floating in a forest.
おもてなしの心、季節感、色んな要素が、道具や花やお菓子、茶室中に散りばめられていて、貴重なお茶碗でお茶をいただき、特別な一日となりました。A spirit of hospitality, sense of the season, and various elements permeated the tea room, with flowers, sweets, and matcha in cherished tea bowls ... it was a special day for me.
長い歴史と荘厳な伝統を引き継いで行くには、並々ならぬエネルギーと努力を要するかと思いますが…I think it takes extraordinary energy and effort to carry on this long history and solemn tradition ...
「夢を夢で終わらせない」ー櫻本坊のメッセージには、天武天皇から脈々と引き継がれてきた、強い意志が込められているようです。“I won't let this end as just a dream” — Sakuramotobo’s message contains a strong will that has been handed down from Emperor Tenmu.
またここに戻ってきたい、そう思う場所でした。It is a place where I want to return.
