While exercising at Lake Sanaru today, I saw an interesting atmospheric phenomenon.
今日佐鳴湖でのエクササイズ中、興味深い大気現象を目にしました。
It's called a 'sundog' and they are somewhat rare to see so clearly.
この現象は、「幻日」と呼ばれるもので、こんなにはっきり見えるのは結構珍しいのです。
They look like a kind of bright, rainbow-coloured spot in the sky.
明るい虹色のスポットのようなものに見えます。
In the picture above, you can see the sundog as indicated by the white arrow.
上の写真で白い矢印で示したところが幻日です。
The setting sun is on the left side and the sundog is on the right side.
夕日が左手に、幻日が右手にあります。
Sundogs are created by the refraction of light through hexagonal ice crystals ... most often in winter months.
幻日は、六角形の氷の結晶を通して光が反射することによって起こり、冬場によく見られます。
Usually, there are two bright spots on each side of the sun, two sundogs ... but today I only saw one.
通常、太陽の両側に明るい二つの光、二つの幻日が発生します…が、今日は一つしか見えませんでした。
In ancient times, sundogs were often understood to be a bad omen ... a sign that God was going to seek some revenge.
古くは、幻日は凶兆と見られていました…神が何らかの報復を企てているしるしと考えられたのです。
The painting below was done in 1535 in Sweden and depicts some sundogs in the sky over Stockholm.
下の絵は1535年にスウェーデンで描かれたストックホルムの空に浮かぶ幻日です。
It was assumed that God was going to seek revenge on the king for being heavy-handed with his enemies.
神が敵な王に業を煮やして報復を企てていると解釈されました。
These days, most people don't believe such craziness.
現代では、そんな迷信を信じる人はほとんどいません。
We know that sundogs are just a bunch of pretty-looking ice crystals in the sky.
幻日は、たくさんの美しい氷の結晶が空中にあることを示しているのだと、私たちはわかっているからね。
