Every other month, I go to Kyoto for my cha-no-yu tea lesson.
２ヶ月に一度、茶の湯の稽古のために京都に通っています。
My lesson starts at 4:30pm so I usually have some time for sightseeing in the daytime.
僕の稽古は午後の4時半に始まるので、いつもその前に観光する時間があるんです。
This time I visited the highly regarded National Property Katsura Imperial Villa.
今回は、大変評価の高い、国有財産の桂離宮を訪れました。
Visiting in the dead of winter may not be the ideal time as the trees were bare and everything was grey.
どんよりとした真冬に訪れるのは理想的じゃないですよね、木々は枯れて、全てが薄暗い感じで。
Unfortunately, the main teahouse was closed as the thatched roof was being replaced.
残念のことに、メインの茶室は茅葺き屋根の葺替えのため、公開されていませんでした。
But there is an austere beauty to Katsura Imperial Villa's winter face.
でも、桂離宮の冬の姿には簡素な美しさがあります。
In particular, I love seeing the traditional straw belt, tree-wrapping technique called, 'komomaki'.
特に、伝統的な「菰(こも)巻き」と呼ばれる木に菰を巻く技術が見られて良かったです。
Originally done as a form of pest control, it's now more of a decorative seasonal item 'fūbutsushi' for winter.
もともとは、害虫から保護するためのものでしたが、今では、むしろ冬の風物詩となっています。
Beautiful.
美しい。
The aesthetic reminded me of some childhood stories I used to love reading.
この美的感覚、僕が子供の頃読むのが大好きだったお話を思い出し ました。
The Dr. Seuss series of kids books are very famous in North America.
北米でとっても有名な子供向けの本、ドクター・スースのシリーズ。
My parents used to read them to me and my siblings as bedtime stories.
両親がよく僕と兄妹のために、おやすみ前に読んでくれました。
Funny how you can be reminded of things in seemingly unrelated places.
こんな全く関係のない場所で思い出すなんて、おかしなものです。
Japan's Katsura Imperial Villa and Dr. Seuss... connected in my mind.
日本の桂離宮とドクター・スース… 僕の頭の中で繋がっちゃた。
Haha.

I'm looking forward to returning here when the garden is green.
庭が緑になる頃に、再び訪れるのを、楽しみにしています。
