During Golden Week, I drove over to Mount Fuji to do some hiking.
ゴールデンウィーク中、ハイキングのために富士山までドライブしました。
I asked a couple of friends if they wanted to join me and everyone said, 'No Way!'
何人かの友人を誘ってみたのですが、みんなのこたえは「やだよー」。
So I went by myself ... to 'The Sea of Trees National Forest' also known as Aokigahara in Japanese.
というわけで、1人で行ってきました…青木ヶ原と知られている国の天然記念物にも指定されている国立公園に
For Japanese people, the name Aokigahara conjures up the ghostly image of a spooky, foreboding place.
青木ヶ原ときくと、日本人は薄気味悪い、禁断の地といったゾッとするイメージを持つようです。
This is because the park is famous as a suicide spot.
なぜならば、この地が自殺の名所とも言える場所であるからです。
About 50-80 troubled souls decide to end-it-all here every year.
毎年５０人から８０人の迷える人々がここで人生にピリオドを打つのです。
Anyways, I wanted to go hiking.
まあ、それでもね、私はハイキングをしたかったの
The forest in Aokigahara is beautiful with a green moss carpeting the forest floor.
青木ヶ原は美しい苔の絨毯が一面を覆う美しい森です。
The canopy is quite dense and everything is very quiet and peaceful.
林冠は隙間がないほどで、全てがしん、と静まり返っています。
Aokigahara is a beautiful place, in spite of the unsettling human aspect.
青木ヶ原は、人々の心を惑わせる場ではあっても、やはり美しい場所です。
I mostly stuck to the hiking trails but did take a few off-trail detours for fun.
私は大半はハイキングコースを進みましたが、ちょっとだけ道を外れて歩いてみました。
Unfortunately, I didn't see any ghosts.
残念ながら、幽霊さんには出会えませんでした。
However, I was lucky enough to see a big herd of about 30 deer eating their breakfast.
でも、朝食を食む30頭ほどの鹿の群れを見ることが出来ました。
Quite amazing.
結構感激。
Last month, a movie about Aokigahara starring Mathew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, and Ken Watanabe opened in theaters.
先月、マシュー・マコノヒー、ナオミ・ワッツ、そして渡辺謙が出演した映画が劇場公開されました。
Apparently it's a real stinker ... so I won't be seeing it.
どうやらこの映画…残念な感じらしいです…ので、見るつもりはありません。

The drive home through the eastern side of the forest was equally magnificent.
森の東側を通って家路につきましたが、それも同じく最高でした。
It's worth doing if you don't want to hike.
ハイキングをしなくても、ドライブにも絶好の場所ですよ。
If you can get past the scary image, Aokigahara is a great place to visit ... a return trip of course.
もし怖いイメージを払拭することが出来るなら、青木ヶ原は訪れるべき場所と言えるでしょう…もちろんちゃんと帰って来てくださいね。
