Last weekend, I visited the 400-year-old birthplace of Japanese wasabi.
先週末、400年前に日本のわさびが誕生した地を訪れました。
One of the least famous, but historically important wasabi growing areas of Japan is Utogi.
おそらく最も世間に知られてはいない、でも歴史的にも重要な日本有数のわさび産地が、有東木です。
Utogi is located about 1.5 hours drive from Hamamatsu City, up the Abe River, north of Shizuoka City.
有東木は、浜松市から車で1時間半ほどの静岡市北部、阿部川上流に位置しています。
It's a very scenic route and the village is situated in a steep valley with many ravines.
中々景色の良いドライブで、有東木村は多くの渓谷のある切り立った谷間にあります。
These steep valleys and tight ravines are an important part of wasabi cultivation.
険しい谷と峡谷は、わさび栽培に重要な要素です。
To develop properly, wasabi plants need an ever constant supply of fast flowing fresh water.
わさびの生育には、途切れることのなく早く流れる真水が欠かせないのです。
There's lot of it at Utogi.
それが、有東木にはたくさんあるのです。
They don't use any kind of fertilizer, so water quality is very important.
一切の肥料を使わないため、水の質が肝心なのです。
Wasabi grows along terraced steps that are continually irrigated.
わさびは常に水が流れる階段状のわさび田で育ちます。
It takes about 18 months to 2 years for the plants to reach maturity.
わさびが完全に育つには、18か月から2年ほどかかります。
Some of the stone-walled stepped-terraces are hundreds of years old ... they're quite amazing.
いくつかの石壁に囲われた段々の水田は、なんと何百年物…かなりすごいです。
In the valleys around Utogi there are beautiful rows of green tea.
有東木やその周辺の谷には美しいお茶畑もあります。
We also saw many chestnut trees with prickly, unripened burs.
トゲトゲの未成熟のイガがついた栗の木も目にしました。
Green coloured agricultural foods are everywhere.
至る所に、緑色の農産物がいっぱい。
I brought a couple of wasabi stalks home with me and used my grater to add some zingy flavor to my steak dinner.
私は何本かわさびを購入し、家に持ち帰りました。そして、すりおろしたわさびが、その日の夕飯のステーキに素晴らしい味わいを加えてくれました。
Utogi is a grate place to visit and I recommend it for an afternoon out.
有東木は素敵なところ。午後のお出かけにおすすめです。("grate"は、「～をすりおろす」という意味。わさびの里だけに"great"→"grate"。）
It was fun walking around the wasabi terraces and learning about Japanese culinary history in this tiny village.
このちっちゃな村で、わさび田を歩き回ったり日本の珍味の歴史について学ぶのは楽しいですよ。
