Last week, a PoPBunka! student hosted some rich Chinese clients in Hamamatsu.
先週、PoPBunka! の生徒さんが、浜松でお金持ちの中国人のお客様達を接待したそうです。
They talked about the current pollution problems in China and the system to reduce smog in Beijing.
中国の汚染問題や、北京のスモッグ対策について話したそう。
The plan involves implementing a driving schedule on bad air days where license plate numbers are used.
その対策では、空気汚染日の自動車利用制限に、ナンバープレートを使用しています。
Cars with odd-numbered license plates are allowed to drive in the city on odd-numbered calendar days only.
奇数のナンバープレートを付けた車は奇数の日のみ市街地に乗り入れが許可されます。
Cars with even-numbered license plates are allowed to drive in the city on even-numbered calendar days only.
偶数のナンバープレートを付けた車は偶数の日のみ市街地に乗り入れが許されます。
This system is supposed to have the effect of reducing drivers by half and thus reducing car smog by half.
この対策により、乗り入れ車両台数が半分になり、そのために自動車排気ガスが原因のスモッグも半分となるという効果が期待できるのです。
Sounds good doesn't it?

It seems like a simple and effective idea.

So, what's a well-to-do family to do?
では、彼らのような裕福な家庭はどうするか？
Simple answer ... buy two cars.
答えは簡単…車を二台買う。
The company president said he has a BMW for odd days and a Mercedez-Benz for even days.
その社長さんは、奇数の日用にBMW、偶数の日用にメルセデスベンツを所有しているのだとか。
The BMW has an odd-number license plate and the Benz has an even-number plate.
BMWには奇数のナンバープレートを、メルセデスベンツには偶数のナンバープレートを付けているのです。
He can drive any day he chooses, he just has to remember to switch cars.
このことで、車を替えることさえ覚えていれば、彼はいつでも自動車を使うことが出来るようになったのです。
Apparently, his wife has two cars as well ... and his kids.
どうやら、彼の奥さんも二台車を持っているらしい…そして彼の子供達もり
It must be nice to be rich.
