A few weeks ago, I was teaching a night class to a group of youngish ladies.
数週間前、お若いお嬢さん達とのレッスンにて。
It was about 8.30pm when suddenly an older lady knocked on my office door.
夜8時半頃かな、突然中年のオバサマがオフィスのドアをノック。
I've seen her around my building but I don't know her at all.
近所で見かけたことはあるものの、全然知らない人。
Interrupting our class, she asked for my assistance to help with a problem outside.
授業を中断してきてさ、そのオバサマは僕にオフィスの外でなんか手伝ってくれって言うんだ。
As a gentleman, it is my duty to respond when ladies are in distress.
僕ったら、ジェントルマンだからさ、やっぱりレディが困ってたらなんとかしなきゃと思うのよ。
I went outside and found a group of night hostess type girls gathered around a car on the roadside.
外に出てみたらさ、まあいわゆるホステス風のお姉さん達が路肩に停めた車を取り囲んでるわけよ。
I guess they were going off to work ... there was a strong odor of cheap perfume and lots of shiny clothes and jewelry.
やっすい香水の匂いがプンプンして、テカテカした服着て、ジャラジャラアクセサリーを着けていたから、出勤前なんだな、と僕は推察。
One of the girls had gotten her stiletto caught inside the rungs of a rain grate and she couldn't pull it out.
お姉さんの1人のとんがったヒールが側溝の穴にはまって抜けなくなっちゃってたんだ。
It was wedged in pretty tight.
ガッチリはまりこんじゃってた。
With a little effort, I managed to pull her shoe out without much damage.
結局、あんまり苦労なく、靴にも最小限のダメージだけで、僕はお姉さんの靴を抜いてあげることに成功。
She put on her shoe and they all got into the car and sped off without much of a thank you.
お姉さんは靴を履き、みんな車に乗って、大したお礼も言わずにサッサと出て行った。
I thought they were a little rude.
む、失礼な、とは思ったけどさ。
About 20 minutes later, the older lady returned with a 'thank-you' present.
20分くらいしたら、最初にやって来たオバサマが、「お礼」の品を手に戻ってきた。
A bag of shucreams (cream puffs).
シュークリーム。
Very appropriate.
