Last Golden Week I went up into the Tohoku Region with some people from Hamamatsu to do some volunteer work.
GW中、ボクは浜松の友達と一緒に東北へボランティアに行ってきました。
As the world already knows, the area was hit by the biggest earthquake in recorded Japanese history followed by an enormous tsunami with unimaginable destructive power.
世界中で知られている通り、日本での記録史上最も大きな地震、そして津波が東北を飲み込みました。
Our little group was hoping to offer a small amount of help.
ボク達のグループがわずかでもできること。
There were about 15 people in our group, about half were foreigners and the other half were Japanese.
15人の仲間が集まり、そのうちの外国人、日本人の割合は半々。
The foreigners were a mixed group from Canada, Britain, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, and Brazil.
外国人の方は出身がカナダ、イギリス、スウェーデン、ハンガリー、スロバキア、ブラジルと多様。
Our team leader, Mike, planned a great project where we would install some needed showers in an area that still had no water or electrical services.
チームリーダーのMikeがとってもいい事を考え付いて、まだ水道が通っていない地域にシャワー室を用意してあげることに。
Mike planned and built the showers in Hamamatsu and they were disassembled for transport to Tohoku.
Mikeは浜松でこの計画を立て、シャワー室を作りました。そして東北へ運ぶため、いったん解体。
We also brought along some bicycles, food items and other donated goods.
道中で自転車、食料や寄付する物なんかを買い足して現地へ。
Leaving Hamamatsu after midnight, we arrived at our accommodation near Minami Sanriku in the late afternoon.
深夜に浜松を出発して、南三陸町近くの宿泊所に到着したのは、夕方近くになってからでした。
It was a pretty long drive up through Tokyo, Fukushima, and into Miyagi Prefecture.
東京、福島を抜けて宮城県に入るためには、かなりの距離がありました。
In total, we stayed for about 5 nights at a lumber mill owner's house.
合計で、ボク達は製材所の社長宅に５泊することに。
We set up the showers in a small fishing village between Minami Sanriku and Kesenuma.
シャワー室は南三陸町と気仙沼の間にある小さな漁村で組み立てられました。
You can see a picture of the showers below... not very beautiful, but they are well built and functional.
ブログ下を見るとシャワー室の写真が... 見栄えは良くないけれど、よく出来ているし機能面にも優れてるんだよ。
Hopefully, they will be useful for the local people in the area who are reconstructing their lives.
生活の立て直しをしている被災者の人々にそのシャワーが役立ってほしいです。
