How would you like to wake up in the morning and see these guys on your front lawn?
朝目が覚めたら、こんなお客さんが家の庭にいるって、どう？

My mother sent me these pictures of some elk the other day.
こないだお母さんがこの写真を送ってきたんだ。

The elk seem to be having a relaxing time on the lawn and they don't look very worried or stressed about anything.
このシカさん達、だいぶリラックスした時間を過ごされているようで、心配やストレスなんてあんまりなさそう。

The neighborhood in the pictures is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
ここは我が家からも近いカナダのアルバータ州カルガリー。

Calgary is a big city so it's a little unusual for such large animals to be seen in the residential areas.
カルガリーは大きな都市だから、こんな住宅地で大きな動物を見かけるなんてちょっと珍しいことなんだ。

Whenever such animals are seen in urban areas, it's usually because they are looking for food.
市街地でこういう動物がいるのは、通常食べ物を探しに山から下りてくるため。

During especially cold winters, deer, bears, elk, moose and other large animals have trouble finding food in the wild.
特に寒い冬には、クマやオオツノジカ、ヘラジカなどなど、体の大きな野性動物が食べるものが無くなることがあるんだ。

So they look for food in the garbages around the city areas.
だから市街地でゴミをあさったりする、というワケ。

Sometimes they get lost, but usually it's about finding food.
大体はそんな理由で、時には迷子になって街をさまようことも。

All of these animals can be very dangerous, especially bears, so it's best to keep a very safe distance.
こういった動物、特にクマなんかはとっても危険だから、距離を置いて近づかないことが大事。

When I was in high school, I remember seeing a group of deer out my bedroom window.
ボクも高校生の時、家の窓の外にシカの群れがいたことがあるよ。

It was very exciting ... there's a zoo in my backyard!
すっごく面白かった... うちの庭が動物園になるなんて！
