With the snow falling last weekend, some students told me stories about making snowmen.
先週末の降雪の後のこと、生徒さんのうち何人かから 雪だるまを作った話を聞かせてみらいました。

A few students even showed me some pictures.
写真を撮ってきてくれた人もちらほら。

When I was looking at these photos, I noticed something.
写真を見ていて、ふとあるｺﾄに気づきました。

In North America and Europe, we make our snowmen using three snow balls.
欧米では、3つの球を使って雪だるまを作ります。

One ball is for the head, one is for the torso, and the last is for the lower body.
1つは頭、1つは胴、そして最後の1つは半身。

However, in Japan, snowmen are made using only two spheres.
だけど、日本では2つの球しか使わないんだよね。

One for the head and one for the body.
1つが頭、もう片方が胴。

I was wondering why only two snow balls for Japanese snowmen?
これってなんでなんだろう？

Maybe Japanese people have shorter lower bodies?
日本人の半身の方が短めだから？

Maybe American people are fatter and need more body represented?
アメリカ人の方が太ってて重量級だから？

Then I realized that Japanese snowmen are actually Daruma made from snow.
そして気付いたんだけど、日本人のスノーマンってだるまなんだよね。

So they are not supposed to be depicting people.
だから人を表しているワケぢゃないんだね。

A Daruma's shape is shorter and more rounded than a persons body.
だるまの姿かたちは人間より小柄で丸みがあるでしょ。

A Japanese snowman is not supposed to be a 'man', it's supposed to be a Daruma.
'人'を表してるんじゃなく、だるまを表しているのが日本の雪だるまなんだね。

Mystery solved.
謎が解けた。
