I went to a Taiko performance for the first time last Sunday.
日曜日に太鼓ショーを観に行ってきました。

The group was called, 'Shidara" and they are from Aichi Prefecture.
ショーを行ったのは、愛知県出身の「志多ら」というグループ。

The show I saw was called, 'Tokoshienomichi' and the venue was a countryside school gymnasium without any air conditioning.
ボクが観に行ったのは「悠久（とこしえ）の道」というツアーで、田舎にある、エアコンも付いていない小学校の体育館での公演。

Wow, was it ever hot. I was sweating like a pig.
あぁぁ、これまでに経験したこともないような暑さだった。汗だくでまるでブタみたい。

I can't imagine how hot the drummers must have been.
ドラマーの皆さんがどれほど暑かったんだろうと思うとビビっちゃう。

My original expectation of this show was that it was going to be serious and very traditional.
もともとは、超伝統的でシリアスな演奏を期待してた。

Maybe the show was very traditional, but it was also very fun and full of energy.
たぶん間違いなく伝統的ではあったけれど、同時にエネルギッシュでとても楽しめるものだった。

All of the drummers had very expressive faces and looked like they really enjoyed drumming.
ドラマーの皆さん、とっても表情豊かで、太鼓を叩くのを心の底から楽しんでるのが伝わってくるみたいだった。

何を言ってるのか、写真を見たら分かるよね。

Good news everybody!
みなさんにグッドニュース！

Gundam RX-78-2 GUNPLA 30th is now protecting Shizuoka City.
ガンプラ30周年 ガンダムRX-78-2が静岡市を守ってくれています。

Last Sunday morning, at 6am, I drove to Shizuoka City to see the giant Gundam model on display outside Higashi-Shizuoka Station.
日曜の朝6時に浜松を出発し、東静岡まで巨大ガンダムを見に行ってきました。

I know, it was a very nerdy thing to do.
これがスゴくオタクな行動だってこと、知ってる。

I am a nerd, but there were a lot of other nerdy guys there too.
ボクはオタクで、んでもって、そこには他のオタク仲間達がゴロゴロ。だから大丈夫。

Unfortunately, the robot was erected inside a fenced area and you have to pay to enter.
残念ながら、ロボットはフェンス内に作られていたので入場するのにはお金が必要。

Because I went at 6am, it wasn't open yet but there were already some nerdy guys waiting in line.
6時なんかに行っちゃったもんだから、まだ入場もできなくてオタクな人たちが列になって待機中だった。

Maybe they were more nerdy than me.
きっとみんな、ボクよりもっとオタク。

I could take some pictures on the steps going to the station.
駅までの道すがら、少し写真を撮影してきました。

The main entrance gate to the area also has a clear view of Gundam.
入場ゲートからそこまで、ちょうどガンダムが一望できるいいスポット。

I think I stayed for a total of 20 minutes.
滞在していたのは合計で20分くらいだったと思う。

I arrived back in Hamamatsu City at 8.30am.
浜松に帰ってきたのが8時半だった。

My friend is a very fast driver with a very fast car.
ボクの友達（今回の運転手さん）は、速い車に乗ってて、しかも運転も飛ばす彼。

So it was a quick trip.
だから「ピューン」な一瞬旅でした。

Anyways, I will probably go back later and pay to enter the park to see Gundam up close.
そんなこんなで、今度はちゃんと入場料を払って、もう一度ガンダムを見に行ってくるつもり。

Sometimes, I can be pretty nerdy too.
ときどきは、ボクだってスゴいオタクになっちゃうんだから。

There's a new novelty beer on the market.
ビール市場に新商品が登場。

Actually, it's been on the market since April 1st of this year.
実のところ、この商品は今年n4月1日に発売されているんです。

But it's no joke. It's real.
これギャグ商品じゃないよ、ほんとに売り物なんだよ。

The beer is called, 'Toriaezu Beer' and it's made by Sankt Gallen breweries in Kanegawa Prefecture.
商品名は'とりあえずビール'で、神奈川県のサンクトガーレンという会社から売り出されています。

"とりあえずビール" translates to "Get Started Beer" in English.
"とりあえずビール"は、英語で"Get Started Beer"といいます。

I guess this beer is what you should start drinking with when you go to a bar or restaurant.
これはきっと、バーやレストランに行ったときにまず飲むべきビールだね。

The bottle design looks very plain so the beer probably tastes plain too.
見た目があっさりしたデザインだから、味もきっとあっさりしてるんじゃないかな。

I heard that the taste is supposed to be very plain so that this beer can match any food.
味をさっぱりとさせることで、どんな食事にも合うビールになるとのこと。

It doesn't sound very exciting.
それって、そんなにワクワクする味じゃあないってことなのかな。

But I will probably try one if I can find it.
でも、もし売ってるのを見つけたら買ってみようと思ってます。

Good news for Suzuki people!
世の「鈴木さん」へニュースです！

There's a new Suzuki association in Hamamatsu.
浜松には、「浜松鈴木さん楽会」というものがあるのです。

It's for people named 'Suzuki' only.
これは「鈴木さん」のためだけの会。

Sorry to everybody else ...
他の姓を持つ方には残念...

Apparently, Hamamatsu City has the most Suzukis in Japan.
どうも、浜松市は全国一の「鈴木さん人口」を誇っているそうです。

I know it's a very popular name because my address book on my mobile phone is full of Suzukis.
ボクにも分かるくらい、だってボクのケータイ電話帳、「鈴木さん」で溢れてる。

We have about 8 Suzuki students at PoPBunka!
PoPBunka!には8人の鈴木さんが在籍。

One of my students joined the Suzuki Association and you can see his membership card and Suzuki button above.
そのうちの一人が「浜松鈴木さん楽会」に加入しまして、この名刺とボタンを見せてくれました。

I wonder if any of my other students have joined... please let me know if you have!
他の生徒さん達も実は加入してたりして...メンバーがいたら教えてください！

The Suzuki association has an organizational credo and there are 10 principles;
「楽会」として、浜松鈴木さん楽会は10の信条と理念を掲げています。

- Take pride in the Suzuki Name.
　鈴木姓に誇りを持つ。

- Call yourself by your first name.
　名前を呼ぶときは下の名前で。

- Address your fellow Suzukis warmly, using their first names.
　「鈴木さん仲間」を呼ぶときには暖かく、下の名前を口にすること。

　「鈴木さん仲間」の信頼を悪事に利用しない。

Rainy season is almost over and the full summer heat is about to hit.
梅雨明けも近づき、もうそろそろ夏の暑さが本番ですね。

Some older ladies from the Enshu area taught me the Enshu dialect expression, 'ひずるしいやぁ'.
この地域に住む年配女性達が、ボクに遠州弁を教えてくれました。「ひずるしいやぁ」って。

I like it!
おもしろ〜い！

In English, we also have many expressions to describe the summer heat.
英語にも、夏の暑さを表現する言葉がたくさんあります。

Of course you can say, "It's hot!" ... but that's not a very expressive choice of words.
もちろん"It's hot!（暑いです）"でもいいけど...これでは豊かな表現はできません。

Instead, how about using on of these other expressions;
代わりに、こんな言い方をしてみるのはどうでしょうか。

- It's boiling out!
　＜イッツ ボイリング アウト＞

- It's Afirica hot.
　＜イッツ アフリカ ホット＞

- It's too hot to think.
　＜イッツ トゥ ホット トゥ シンク＞

- I'm roasting.
　＜イッツ ロースティング＞

- It's going to be a scorcher today.
　＜イッツ ゴーイング トゥ ビー ア スコーチャー トゥデイ＞
　
- Today is a thermometer breaker.
　＜トゥデイ イズ ア サーモヒーター ブレーカー＞

- I don't want to go out, it's raining fire.
　＜アイ ドント ウォントゥ ゴー アウト、イッツ レイニング ファイア＞

- It's so hot you could fry eggs on the sidewalk.
　＜イッツ ソー ホット ユー クドゥ フライ エッグス オン ザ サイドウォーク＞

- I'm sweating like a pig.

- It's hot enough to melt hell.
　＜イッツ ホット イナフ トゥ メルト ヘル＞

- It's so hot that everyday is like Fry-day.

- It's muggy!

- It's so hot, today I saw a chicken lay a fried egg.

Try some of these expressions the next time you want to describe the heat.
今度「暑い〜」って言うときには、この表現を使ってみてね。

「暑い、暑い」って、これから毎日のように使う言葉ですよね。

この「暑いな〜」の英語表現がたーくさん出てきましたが、いくつかダジャレに気が付きました？

例えばIt's so hot that everyday is like Fry-day.「あんまり暑いから毎日がフライデーみたいだよ」。

フライデー（Friday）といえば、金曜日。

じゃあ、Fry-dayは？.... これ、Fry（=フライにする、油で揚げる）って意味をモジっているんです。

あらら、英語でオヤジギャグかよ！って感じですよね☆★

英語の文にカタカナ発音を付けましたので、これを機会にバシバシ使ってみてくださいね！

2010ワールドカップは閉幕してしまいましたが、ここで新たなセレブリティが誕生しました。

Paul is an octopus that lives at the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany.
パウル君はドイツ・オーバーハウゼンのシー ライフ センターで飼育されているタコ。

The animal has amazing powers of prediction (or maybe he is just lucky).
この彼は恐るべき予知能力の持ち主なのです（それか、ラッキーなだけかな）。

Paul has been predicting the outcome of soccer matches during this World Cup.
パウル君、ワールドカップの勝敗を予知してきたのです。

The German octopus oracle was correct again in guessing that Spain will win the final.
決勝でのスペインの勝利も見事に当てました。

Paul the Octopus has been 100% correct in the World Cup.
ワールドカップ勝敗予想、パウル君の的中率は100％。

He has made 7 correct predictions.
7回の予想を全て当てたのです。

When Paul predicted that Germany would lose against Spain in the semi-finals, some people were not happy.
準決勝ドイツ対スペイン戦では、ドイツが負けると予想したパウル君に対ししかめ顔の人達も。

There were death threats against Paul as some angry people threatened to cook and eat him.
料理して食べてやろうとパウル君の命を狙った輩もいた事で、パウル君絶体絶命のピンチ。

So the Prime Minister of Spain offered state protection for Paul.
そこでスペイン首相は彼に対して、国家保護を提案したそう。

I bought these two bottles of Coca Cola today.
コカ・コーラのボトルを2本買ってきました。

Recently, the Coca Cola company has made available a smaller sized coke for the Japanese market.
最近の話ですが、コカ・コーラは日本市場をターゲットに現行より小さいサイズを売り出しています。

The large bottle is 500ml and costs ¥147.
500mlボトルは1本147円。

So in the large bottle, 1ml costs ¥.294.
ってことは、1mlあたりが0.294円。

The small bottle is 300ml and costs ¥125.
300mlサイズで売り出したボトルの方は1本125円。

So that means that 1ml costs ¥.416.
1mlあたりでは0.416円の計算。

Does this seem like a rip-off?
ぼったくられてない？

The Coke in the small bottle costs about 25% more than in the large bottle.
300mlの小さいボトルが500mlに比べてお値段25%増だなんて。

The math doesn't add up...　
計算合わなくないですか...

Maybe it tastes about 25% better?
きっと25%増でおいしかったりして？
