On Sunday, there was a historic 100 car parade around Hamamatsu City.
日曜日に浜松市周辺で、１００台のヒストリックカーのパレードがあった。

This parade is part of the 100 year anniversary events that have been planned to celebrate the founding of Hamamatsu City.
このパレードは、浜松市の創設を祝うために計画されている100周年のイベントの一部です。

The start point was the parking area at Hamamatsu City Hall and the cars were on static display for a while for people to look at.
スタート地点は浜松市役所の駐車場で、みんなに見てもらうため車が静止した状態で、しばらくの間展示されていた。

I went over to have a look before the cars left for their tour around the city.
市内へ出発する前に、車を見に行った。


At 9 o'clock, the 'start your engines' announcement was made and the cars slowly departed one by one.
9時になり、「エンジンを起動してください」のアナウンスが流れ、車は１台ずつゆっくりと出発した。

The cars were divided into 2 groups of 50 cars each.
車は、50台ずつの２つのグループに分かれた。

One parade group left from City Hall and traveled counter-clockwise to South Ward, East Ward, Hamakita Ward, Tenryu Ward, North Ward, and finally finished in the West Ward around 5:30pm.
一つのグループは、浜松市役所から反時計回りに南区、東区、浜北区、天竜区、北区そして5時30分ごろに西区で終了した。

The other parade group traveled clockwise around the same circuit.
もう一つのグループは時計回りに同じルートを走行した。


I took quite a few pictures and you can see a few of them here.

One of my students had entered his 1960 convertible Mercedes Benz 190S.


You can see its beautiful black leather interior and georgous white steering wheel below.

He asked me what my favourite car was, but I told him that there were so many cool cars here it's impossible to decide.

Then I told him I liked his car best ... of course!

Some of you may know that I ordered a new 2012 Mini Cooper S and am awaiting delivery.

I noticed there were a lot of Mini Coopers, Austin Minis, and Morris Minis in the parade.

So, if I hold on to my new car for 30 years and it survives my aggressive driving technique, maybe I'll be able to drive it in this parade someday.

  

My nephew fell asleep on the sofa standing up.

It looks like his legs are awake, but his upper body is sleeping.

I am still recovering from my New Year's Eve celebrations last night.

カナダ産のドラゴンの絵を見つけた。彼女はトロントの動物園に住んでいるんだ。

As for my New Year's resolutions ... I have 2 and they are TOP SECRET.
新年の決意として、２つ決めた。これはトップシークレット！

I don't think they are too difficult and I should be able to satisfy them with a little bit of effort.
そんなに難しいことではないと思うし、努力すれば、叶うことだと思う。

I returned to Canada for my winter holidays.
冬休みということで、カナダに帰った。

So I am going to stay for 2 weeks over Christmas and see family and friends.
クリスマスをはさんだ2週間滞在予定だから、家族や友達と会う予定だ。

Of course I will do a lot of shopping and eat and drink too much.
もちろん、たくさんの買い物と飲み食いをするつもり。

Today, I decided to go to Niagara Falls with my sister-in-law and her 2 kids.
今日は、義理の姉と彼女の子供たちとナイアガラにいくことにした。

It's only an hour drive from our house.
ナイアガラの滝へは、家から車で１時間しかかからない。

Unfortunately, the weather today was cold with a frozen drizzle and strong winds.
残念なことに、今日の天気は凍った霧雨と強い風で寒かった。

The mist coming off Niagara Falls added to the damp, cold feeling.
ナイアガラの滝からくる霧で、さらに湿気と寒さが増した。

But we had fun! Niagara Falls really is an awesome sight.
でもとっても楽しかった！滝の景色は本当に最高。

We all know the very famous internet search company named Google Inc.
インターネット検索の大手企業”グーグル”をみんな知っているよね。

And most people know that the word 'google' is also a verb.
そして、グーグルという言葉が動詞っていうことも多くの人が知っている。

The company name is spelled with a capital 'G' while the verb is spelled with a small 'g'.
”グーグル”という会社名は大文字のGから始まり、動詞の場合だと小文字のgになる。

The verb, 'google' was officially included into the Oxford English Dictionary on June 15, 2006.
動詞の"グーグル”は、オックスフォードの英語辞書に2006年の６月15日から正式に登録された。

It was added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary a month later in July 2006.
またメリアムウェブスター辞典に１ヶ月遅れの2006年7月から掲載されるようになった。

These two dictionaries are the most important records of lexicon for British and American English.
この２つの辞典は、イギリスとアメリカ英語の辞書の中でもっとも重要な記録だ。

So the word 'google' is now a verb that means, 'to search for something online'.
だから”グーグル”という言葉はいまや"オンラインで何かを検索する"という意味の動詞だ。

Or you can say, 'Hey Atsuko, can you google a pizzeria and order a large 4 cheese pizza with extra mushrooms, sausage, peppers and mini meatballs?'
『ねえ、あつこ、ピザ屋をインターネットで検索して、マッシュルーム、ソーセージ、ピーマン、ミートボールを追加した
チーズピザのラージサイズを４つを頼んでくれる？』っていうことができる。

Or you might say, 'Hey Atsuko, please stop googling ladies shoes and finish the accounting.'
または、『ねえ、あつこ、インターネットで靴を探すのをやめて、経理の仕事を終わらせてくれないか。』ということもできる。

Finally, an interesting point is that since 'google' is a verb, you can use it with any other search engine.
おもしろい点は、"グーグル"という言葉が動詞になってから、他社のインターネット検索エンジンを使用しているときにも使うことができるということだ。

Like in this sentence, 'Why don't you try googling it on Yahoo Japan?'
『ヤフージャパンで検索（グーグル）してみたらどうですか？』という文のように。

Most news outlets are reporting that this is believed to be Japan's most expensive road accident ever.
多くのニュースメディアは、この事故は日本で起こったもっとも被害総額の高い事故だと報道している。

Eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini, three Mercedes-Benzs, and two other cars were involved.

Of course accidents happen everyday around the world, sometimes involving supercars.

However, I think only in Japan can you find enough people with enough money to buy these kinds of cars who want to travel together.
でもこんな高価な車を購入できるくらいのお金を持っていて、みんなで一緒に旅行したいって思う人が多いのは日本だけだ。

I've noticed that many motor-sports enthusiasts in Japan like to travel in packs attending rallies or other events.
また日本の熱狂的なモータースポーツファンは、ラリーや他のイベントに参加する時に集団で旅行するのが好きな人が多い。

It's called convoying in English.
このことを英語で”convoying"って呼ばれている。

This type of convoy travel is not very popular with western people, and I would think even less so with supercar owners.
このような集団車両旅行を西洋人はあまり好きではないし、スーパーカーを所有している人だったらもっと少ないと思う。

I often see convoys of motorcycle and car club membes driving around on weekends.
週末になるとバイクや車の集団をよく見るよ。

Last year, I remember being overtaken on the highway by a group of about 20 guys riding white and gold Harley Davidsons.
去年、20人くらいの白とゴールドのハーレーダヴィッドソンの集団に追い抜かされたことを思い出した。

The bikes and the riders had been done up like the California Highway Patrol.

The man on the right side is a Chinese guy named Luo Yuanping.
右の写真の男性は中国人。彼の名前は”ルオヤンピン”。

He's from the countryside area west of Shanghai and is 48 years old.
彼は上海西部のとある田舎出身で、48歳だ。

Mr. Luo has been a farmer for most of his life but recently gave it up to become a nurse.
ルオ氏は農家として生計をたてていたが、最近看護士になるために辞めた。

Unlike Mr. Putin, Mr. Luo is single but wants to get married and have children someday.
プーチン首相と違ってルオ氏は独身。でもいつか結婚して子供を持ちたいを思っている。

One of our PoPBunka! students went to Australia last week.

I've had it before and it's actually not so bad ... but maybe a little smelly.

But I was curious to know if kangaroo meat is actually eaten as steaks.

It turns out that there have been kangaroo steaks available in Australia since they became legalized for human consumption in 1980.

Actually, in Australia you can buy kangaroo fillets, kangaroo steaks, kangaroo minced meat and ''kanga bangas”which are kangaroo sausages.

One thing that caught my attention was a recent discussion in Australia to introduce a specific culinary name for kangaroo meat.
ボクの興味をひいたのは、カンガルー肉の食用名を広めようと、ある議論がオーストラリアで最近されていることだ。

When we talk about cow meat we say, 'beef'.
ボク達が牛の肉について話す時、牛肉っていうよね。

When we talk about pig meat we say, 'pork' or 'ham'.
ボク達が豚の肉について話す時、豚肉またはハムっていうよね。

When we talk about lamb meat we say, 'mutton'.
ボク達が羊肉について話す時は、マトンっていうよね。

These kind of names (especially for meat) are called culinary names.
これらの名前は（特にお肉に関しては）食材名として呼ばれている。

The Australian kangaroo meat industry wants to create a culinary name for kangaroo meat.
オーストラリア・カンガルー肉業界は、カンガルー肉の新しい食用名を作りだしたかった。

So, a contest was held by the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia to find a new culinary name.
だからオーストラリア・カンガルー産業協会は、新しい食用名を決めるためにコンテストを行った。

The were 2700 entries made by people from 41 different countries.
41ヶ国から2,700件の応募があった。

Here are some of the proposed culinary names; kangarly, maroo, kuja, roujoe, rooviande, jurru, marsu, kep, kangasaurus, marsupan, and jumpmeat.
ここに候補に残った食用名をあげると、カンガリー、マルー、クジャ、ルージョ,ルーヴィアン,ジュル, マルス, ケプ,カンガサウルス、
マースパン、ジャンプミート。

And the winning culinary name for kangaroo meat? ... Australus.
そして最優秀賞に選ばれた名前は...."オーストラルス”。

In the future, if you see a meat steak on a restaurant menu named 'Australus', then understand that it means kangaroo meat.
近い将来、”オーストラルス”っていう名前のステーキをレストランで見かけたら、それはカンガルーの肉ってわかるよね。

Australus ... hmmm ... sound delicious?
”オーストラルス”って....うーん....　おいしそうな名前？！

  

The Dragon King of Bhutan came to Japan with his beautiful new bride.
ブータンの龍王が美しい彼の妻を連れて日本にやってきた。

His proper name is difficult to pronounce ... Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
彼の正式な名前は発音が難しい......ジグミ・ケサル・ナムゲル・ワンチュク。

But I think most people were interested in his new Dragon Queen wife.
でも、多くの人々は彼の新しい龍妃に興味があったと思う。

Her name is much easier to pronounce ... Jetsun Pema.
彼女の名前はずっと発音しやすい...ジェツン・ペマ。

She's also very young, born in 1990 so she is only 21 years old.
彼女はまたとても若く、1990年に生まれた。弱冠21歳。

And she is VERY beautiful and reportedly very kind and caring.
そして彼女はとても美しく、報道によればとても親切で思いやりがあるそうだ。

Queen Jetsun is a commoner but her family is quite rich and well connected in Bhutanese society.

Her father is a pilot with Bahrain Airlines and has some royal connections in his family.

One interesting point is that Bhutan allows polygamy.

I have many cameras and have been collecting photography books for many years.
たくさんのカメラと写真集を長い間かけて集めてきた。

In fact, I have a small photography book library at PoPBunka! including many large-sized books.

Recently, I bought an interesting book showcasing the work of Andreas Gursky.
最近、ボクはアンドレアス ・グルスキーのおもしろい作品集を買った。

He's a German photographer who specializes in large scale epic photos.
彼は大きな視点でとらえた俯瞰写真を専門とするドイツの写真家だ。

The book is quite interesting and has most of his photos covering his working period from 1980 until 2008.
その作品集は本当におもしろくて、彼の1980年から2008年までの作品が掲載されていた。

By chance, I read a story on BBC News last week reporting that a new price record has been set for an art photo.
先週、偶然、芸術写真の販売価格で新記録が樹立されたというニュースを読んだ。

A photograph entitled, 'Rhein II' (190 × 360 cm) was sold for $4.3 million making it the most expensive photograph ever sold.
『ラインⅡ』という写真は、430万ドルで落札され、この価格は史上最高額となった。

That's about ¥330,000,000! Wow!
約３億円。　ワオー！！

The photo was taken by Andreas Gursky and is of the Rhein River in Germany.
その写真はアンドレアス・グルスキーによって撮影されたドイツにあるライン川の写真だ。

It was taken on an overcast day and it shows the river running through a green embankment.
それは曇りの日に撮られ、緑の堤防に沿って川が流れていることを表している。
